How Does a Bunion Night Splint Work?

Bunions are caused by a deformity of the bones in the foot and toe, causing the toe to rub up against the shoe when walking and causing a bony bump to form over time. Bunion splints can help to reposition the toe back into the anatomically desired position, reducing unwanted friction and allowing the bunion to heal.

How Effective Are Bunion Night Splints?

According to a study done by the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at Iran University, the use of a static orthotic night splint for one month changed the angle of the hallux valgus (the bone that causes bunions when misaligned) by several degrees. It also resulted in an increase in the range of motion of the metatarsophalangeal joint, which improved walking gait and helped to reduce the size and pain of bunions. For even more pronounced results it was recommended that patients wear the splint for a longer period of time.
