Long Blackthorn Coppice Knobstick Country Walking Stick

The Long Blackthorn Coppice Knobstick Country Walking Stick, crafted from blackthorn bark with its distinctive reddish-brown colour and rustic appearance, is a classic British cane, ideal for long walks in the countryside. Slightly longer and heavier than your average cane, this Country Walking Stick can easily handle additional pressure and provide reliable support to everyone.

The Knobstick

A traditional British walking stick, the knobstick is made from coppiced wood, usually ash, hazel or blackthorn. The original tree is cutback, and the resultant shoots form the raw material for walking sticks.

The ‘knob’ handle is formed from the parent tree, so that the walking stick is in effect grown upside down. A good knobstick fits comfortably into the palm of the hand.

Blackthorn Wood

Blackthorn is the traditional wood of Ireland and one of the most sought-after woods for making walking sticks. It is esteemed for its rich colour and the characterful appearance, caused by its spiny thorns.

A Brief History on Coppicing

These sticks are made using the centuries-old 'coppice-with-standard' forestry system to produce the raw material needed to make beautiful walking sticks. Beneath an upper canopy of maturing timber trees, smaller ash trees are grown to around 10cm (4") in diameter. They are then cut at a height of approximately 120cm (4").

Each plant produces new shoots, which are just above the nibbling height of the woodlands population of wild roe deer. Over three to four years, these shoots grow to the correct height and diameter to form raw material for walking sticks.

Often part of the original tree is cut with the stick; turned the other way up, this becomes the handle for a knobstick. Straight sections of wood become hiking poles and those with a natural 'V' in the wood become thumbsticks.

Sizing of the Blackthorn Coppice Knobstick

The approximate height of the stick is 97cm (38"). Due to the natural sourcing and manufacturing process, however, the length may vary slightly from product to product.
