New Children's Grating Test

The New Children's Grating Test is a set of 10 additional cards that upgrade the New Infant Grating Test, enabling the test to be used on children over 12 months of age. This testing method is more effective than letter-based tests for young children because it uses observations of the child's looking behaviour and requires no identification or communication from the child in order to complete the assessment.

About the Grating Testing Method

The Grating Test consists of a number of cards with different gratings printed on them. The examiner shows the cards to the child one by one, observing the looking behaviour of the subject when shown each card. When the grating falls outside the child's range of vision they will not register or look at the pattern, and the examiner will use this as an indication that the child's range of vision has been exceeded.

This testing method tends to be more accurate than letter-based visual tests, simply because the subject is not required to identify the target or communicate with the examiner. As the cards are graded, the examiner is able to accurately quantify the range of vision of the subject.

The New Children's Grating Test

The New Children's Grating Test consists of 10 cards, and upgrades the New Infant Grating Test to a kit appropriate for testing young children as well as infants. Like the Infant Grating Test, each card in this set has two circles printed on it, one with a grating pattern inside and one without. This add-on provides greater sensitivity when testing acuities below 12.5 c/deg.
