Ottobock Tubingen Hip Flexion and Abduction Orthosis

Hip dysplasia, or developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition caused by foetal underdevelopment that results in the "ball and socket" joint of the hip not forming correctly, which can lead to long-term problems later in life. The Ottobock Tubingen Hip Flexion and Abduction Orthosis is designed to help infants recover from this condition by keeping them in a position that promotes natural joint development.

What's Included?

  • 1 x Hip Flexion and Abduction Brace

Which Size Should I Choose?

The Ottobock Tubingen Orthosis comes in three sizes. The size you need will depend roughly on the age of your baby. See the sizing chart below to find out which size you need, then select the size using the drop down menu at the top of the page.

Size Age of Infant
Small Approx. 1 month
Medium Approx. 2-5 months
Large Approx. 6-12 months

What Is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia occurs when a babies' hip joints do not develop properly due to being in an unfavourable position in the womb. This causes the underdevelopment of the acetabulum (the socket that connects to the thigh bone), which results in the socket not being deep enough to cover the head of the thigh bone as it should.

How Does the Ottobock Tubingen Orthosis Help?

While wearing the Ottobock Tubingen Orthosis, babies assume a position that promotes the natural development process of the hip joints. This ensures that the hip develops properly, meaning there is less likelihood of long-term damage in the form of conditions like arthrosis showing up in later life.

How Long Does My Baby Need To Wear the Orthosis?

The duration of therapy will mostly depend on what your doctor recommends. Your doctor will consider how underdeveloped your babies' hip joints are and use this information to determine how long your baby should use the orthosis. Once treatment is complete, the doctor will then begin a process of "weaning" your baby off the orthosis by gradually reducing the amount of time it is worn.

How Long Will It Take My Baby To Get Used to the Support?

Most babies should get used to the orthosis in as quickly as one or two days. In some cases, babies may protest and will need more time to adjust to the support. Should your baby continue to protest when wearing the orthosis, ask your doctor to check the device to make sure it has been setup correctly.
