Invacare Softform Premier Active 2 Hybrid Pressure Relief Mattress
When a patient is already in pain and discomfort, having to transfer from one bed to another to achieve proper pressure relief is not an ideal scenario. The Invacare Softform Premier Active 2 Hybrid Pressure Relief Mattress is an ideal solution, as the foam mattress is considered suitable for a patient at very high risk of pressure ulcers, but can be advanced to an alternating surface through the use of an optional RX Pump (sold separately) if required for patients with existing severe pressure sores.
Please note: While the image above shows a mattress and pump, this mattress is supplied without the RX Pump needed for transition into an alternating mattress. You can add the RX Pump to your order by ticking the box above.
Which Patients Is This Mattress Suitable For?
This mattress provides excellent weight distribution and can be converted into an alternating surface, making it suitable for use by all patient groups. The hybrid therapy that is provided is suitable for all requirements, and can provide comfort and relief for patients with intact skin to those with severe pressure ulcers (when the RX Pump is activated). With the addition of the RX Pump, pressure therapy can be quickly stepped up or down to cater to patient needs and risk level.
How Does the Mattress Provide Both Static and Dynamic Pressure Relief?
The mattress is a cost-effective solution to the ever-changing problem of pressure ulcers, reducing the amount of mattresses and beds required as well as minimising the amount of transfers a patient must be put through. The integral foam mattress is suitable for those at very high risk of pressure sore development, and can be transformed into an alternating air mattress system with the simple push of a button on the RX Pump for treatment of severe ulcers. The alternating air cells located underneath the foam can be seen in the graphic below.
How Does the RX Pump Provide Alternating Air Therapy?
The remarkable versatility of this mattress is provided by the optional RX Pump, which allows the mattress to convert from a static pressure relief surface. While the static foam surface alone provides pressure relief suitable for those at very high risk of pressure sore development, the pump allows the mattress to be 'stepped up' to provide alternating air therapy. This is ideal for treatment of patients with existing severe pressure ulcers.
Is the Pump Easy to Use?
Yes, the pump features a simple 'plug and play' design, meaning it simply needs to be plugged in a switched on to be operational. The unit it extremely quiet, allowing it to be used without disturbing the sleep of the user or patients nearby.
How Do I Connect the Pump to the Mattress?
If you decide to order the RX Pump alongside your mattress for alternating pressure relief therapy, it can be easily connected. To connect your pump, simply follow the instructions detailed in the "Setup" section of the following PDF:

Will This Mattress Provide Pressure Care in a Power Failure?
Yes, the high specification foam surface provides pressure relief suitable for patients at very high pressure sore risk, meaning it is suitable to use without a pump or in the event of a power failure. This eliminates the need for emergency intervention in the event of unforeseen complications.
Can I Replace Components If They Become Worn?
Yes, the Premier Active 2 features a modular construction, meaning all components are easily replaceable. This makes the mattress an extremely economic and versatile way to prevent and treat bed sores, contributing to a lower cost of ownership compared to similarly-equipped pressure care mattress systems.
Can This Hybrid Mattress Be Used with Profiling Beds?
Yes, this mattress is designed with an innovating glide mechanism, allowing it to reduce shear forces and make it highly suitable for use with adjustable beds and profiling beds. This will significantly reduce shear forces, which have been deemed a significant contributing factor in the development of pressure sores (EPUAP Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2014).
How Do the Alternating Air Cells Work?
When the pump is attached and the alternating air function is initiated, the uniquely-designed bow-shaped air cells inflate and deflate beneath the foam surface. This transforms the static surface into a more dynamic therapeutic surface, upgrading pressure relief without disturbing patient comfort. The movement of the cells help to effectively transfer tissue from one area to another, preventing the build up of pressure on any one area.
How Durable is the Strikethrough-Resistant Waterproof Cover?
Strikethrough, or the degradation and separation of cover fibres over time, is a leading cause of mattress cover failure and subsequent core damage. The cover included with your purchase of this mattress is designed to prevent this problem, as it is specially coated to stay intact for much longer than standard covers. As well as this, the cover offers excellent stretch and comfort, along with vapour-permeability to ensure a healthy micro-climate for the patient.
