What Can the Ostomy Simulator Do?

A range of different procedures can be simulated using this model. For example, dilation of the stomas can be demonstrated and practised, along with the application of post-operative and permanent ostomy bags.

Ostomy Irrigation

The colostomy can actually be irrigated. Syringes are included to pump materials through the unit, which provides drainage and excretion at the ileostomy and colostomy. The syringes are inserted through ports in the back of the simulator. One pumps the ileostomy with clear water (or tinted water for added realism) and the other syringe pumps the synthetic stool to the colostomy.

The consistency of the stool can be varied by using water to thin the material and most of the stool can be salvaged and reused. A soft, pliable material is used for the stomas in order to achieve a realistic tactile sensation.
