What Does the Pulse Companion Detect?
Unlike some of our other Alert-iT seizure monitoring devices, this Pulse Companion System does not detect shaking/sudden movements that resemble a seizure, but instead just measures a rapid increase or irregularities in the heart rate of someone with epilepsy.
For Alert-iT motion detection devices, please view the list of products below.
How Does the Alert-iT Pulse Companion Work?
The Alert-iT Pulse Companion isn't complicated - it follows a simple three step rule for seizure detection:
- If the Pulse Companion’s readings fall above or below the set boundaries, an urgent alarm sounds on the caregiver’s pager, alerting them to a potential seizure.
- The alarm is loud and continuous, designed to quickly warn caregivers.
- The only way to stop and reset the alarm is to clear the warning on the Pulse Companion, meaning the alerts can’t be ignored.
Please click here to view the Pulse Companion Handbook for more detailed instructions.
When Is the Best Time to Use the Alert-iT Armband?
Daily activities, including both normal movements and more strenuous physical activity, can have an effect on heart rate and the Pulse Companion's ability to accurately track it. We therefore recommend using in the evening and overnight.
How Often Do I Need to Charge My Pulse Companion?
The Armband Sensor has a 12 - 16 hour battery life. A USB cradle is included which you can plug into the armband to charge it, whilst the pager can be charged with a PSU plug (included) in a standard wall socket.
Adjustable Settings for Maximum Usability
The Alert-it Pulse Companion can be adjusted for a varied range of users thanks to its personalised heart rate threshold. Further settings can be adjusted on your smartphones with the free Alert-iT app.
For instructions on how to use the app, please click here and read pages 13 - 15 of the Handbook.
How To Get the Most Accurate Pulse Readings
To ensure your heart rate can be monitored as accurately as possible, there are three main areas of your arm that we recommend you position your Alert-iT Armband. They are:
- Upper forearm
- Tricep
- Bicep
For optimal use, here is are examples of how to wear your Armband
High Performance Pager for Optimal Use
The 8-Channel Alarm Pager adopts the use of a secure and reliable radio system called SafeLink, which is specifically designed for higher risk medical applications. Outperforming many other pagers, some of it's key features include:
- Longer signal range of up to 450 meters compared to other systems which usually span between 50-100 meters
- Uses a 433MHz frequency to minimise interference with other devices and medical equipment
- High capacity chargers that allow pagers to be left uncharged for up to 3 days
- Pagers can be used as normal whilst on charge for consistent care
