Who Can Use the Erler-Zimmer Canine Intubation Head?

This realistic training phantom is ideal for the medical training of veterinary staff and students. The model allows users to practise the procedures and techniques involved in endotracheal intubation in an accurate and lifelike way.

How Realistic Is the Endotracheal Intubation Simulator?

This training phantom is designed to be as lifelike as possible. It includes a flexible tongue, epiglottis and soft palate to allow for a realistic procedure. Additionally, the teeth are made of hard plastic so that a tooth spreader can be used.

What Is Endotracheal Intubation?

Endotracheal intubation involves the placement of a tube extending from the oral cavity into the trachea. Essentially, this tube is used to keep the airway open. The purposes of this procedure include the following:

  • To deliver the inhalation of anaesthetic drugs
  • To ensure an airway in unconscious canines
  • To administer oxygen for ventilatory support
  • To prevent aspiration during routine dental prophylaxis

Which Position Can the Head Be Used In?

The dog's head is mounted on an ergonomic base which allows for both upright or supine intubation. For maximum stability and accuracy, the included clamp can be used to attach the model to a raised surface.

How Does Canine Endotracheal Intubation Work?

This veterinary procedure is usually carried out in the following sequence:

  1. When the dog is in sternal recumbency, the EI tube administrator will pull the tongue out of its mouth.
  2. Next, they will locate the larynx (using a laryngoscope) and depress the epiglottis to examine the arytenoid cartilages and vocal folds.
  3. The lubricated end of the endotracheal tube can then be passed into the trachea until the tip is midway between the larynx and thoracic inlet.
  4. The tube is then secured in place and attached to an inhalation anaesthesia machine, respirator or squeeze bag.
