Jamar Grooved Pegboard

The Jamar Grooved Pegboard is designed for a challenging dexterity test and includes 25 holes with randomly positioned slots that require the pegs to be rotated for correct insertion. This makes the test with the grooved pegboard more demanding than an ordinary dexterity test.

What Included with the Jamar Grooved Pegboard?

The Jamar Grooved Pegboard includes:

  • 1 x Jamar test board
  • 25 x Metal pegs
  • 1 x Examiner's manual

What Is the Jamar Grooved Pegboard?

The Jamar Grooved Pegboard is designed for a challenging dexterity test and includes 25 holes with randomly positioned slots that require the pegs to be rotated for correct insertion. This means the test with the grooved pegboard requires more complex cognitive and visual motor coordination than usual pegboard tests.

How Is the Jamar Grooved Pegboard Different from Standard Jamar Pegboard?

A traditional Jamar pegboard is a rectangular board with two sets of 25 holes running vertically. Small metal pegs are placed in the cup on the side, while the user is required to place them vertically in the holes as rapidly as possible.

The grooved pegboard, on the other hand, features 25 holes with randomly positioned slots, which means that the pegs must be rotated before they can be inserted. This is much more challenging, and leads to very accurate results when assessing one's fine motor skills.

Where Is the Jamar Grooved Pegboard Used?

Similar to the traditional Jamar pegboard, the Jamar Grooved Pegboard is used for testing situations in:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Vocation therapy
  • Pre-employment screening

Why Take a Dexterity Test?

A dexterity test helps to evaluate the manual abilities of individuals in order for therapists to provide the appropriate therapy or treatment that is required. It involves placing the pegs as quickly as possible into the holes on the pegboard.

Who Can Use the Jamar Grooved Pegboard?

The Jamar Grooved Pegboard is exceptionally easy to administer, and can be performed without any prior experience or knowledge. It is often used by:

  • Occupational and physical therapists for injury rehabilitation, as a tool to obtain baseline data on a patient, as well as documenting patient progress or the degree of a disability.
  • Vocational evaluators to determine a subject's ability and aptitude for certain work-related applications. It is also used to develop a specific training program, giving an individual the skills to complete a job or task that requires manual dexterity.
  • Human resource directors and temporary staffing agencies who use it as a pre-employment screening and selection tool. An applicant's performance on the pegboard test can indicate their ability to perform tasks in a job that requires manual dexterity.

How Do I Use the Jamar Grooved Pegboard?

To set up, place the board on the table and put all of the pins in the well at the top of the board. Then take the test:

  1. Take one pin from the well and insert it into the top hole on the right.
  2. Continue inserting pins for 30 seconds. If you drop any pins, do not pick them up.
  3. Count the number of pins successfully placed in the holes and write down your total score.
  4. Compare your score with the normative scores included in the user's manual.
