Who Can Use the Harvest Pressure Relief Air Cushion?
The Harvest Pressure Relief Air Cushion is well suited to users who are at an extremely high risk of developing pressure sores. It is an effective relief for those who spend most of their day sitting down in the same chair and has proven useful for patients who have recently left hospital. It is suitable for users who weigh as much as 150kg or 23 stone.
The cushion is also suitable for helping patients who have existing pressure sores that need pressure relief. By reducing the pressure felt on these sores it means that the skin has time to recover as blood can begin to flow more smoothly.
How Does the Alternating Air Pressure Cushion Work?
The Harvest Pressure Relief System works using a pump that is connected into the mains. This pump will alternate air to six different cells within the cushion in various adjustable cycles. This helps to ensure that air pressure is equal and catered to the specific user, reducing the chances of pressure sores from developing.
As the Pressure Cushion uses six cells, it means that the pressure is evenly distributed across a wide area. By evenly distributing pressure it means that skin that had been receiving an uneven level of pressure has been allowed to breathe, helping greatly in the recovery of, and prevention, of pressure sores.
How Do I Use the Alternating Air Pressure Cushion?
Once you receive your Alternating Pressure Relief Cushion you will want to install it. This can be easily done by following these six steps:
- Unpack the system and place the pump unit next to the chair
- Place the seat cushion in the chair with the cells/vapour cover pointing upwards
- Connect the tubes leading from the cushion to the outlet ports on the pump (letter A on the image below)
- Adjust the dial on the comfort control setting (letter B) according to the patient's weight
- Connect the seat pump to the power supply and switch the pump on
- When the low pressure indicator (letter D) has extinguished the patient may be placed on the cushion
Where everything is located on the control panel
What Else Do I Need to Know When Setting Up the Cushion?
Once connected to the power supply, the low pressure indicator should turn off before 30 minutes have passed. This is the light that will illuminate should a fault be connected so it's important to check this light at regular intervals. From here you can adjust patient weight and adjust the comfort setting.

How Can the Pressure Relief Cushion Prevent Pressure Sores?
The Alternating Pressure Relief Cushion prevents pressure sores because it can evenly distribute pressure using air supplied from its pump. This even air pressure takes away any negative pressure that may be been felt on the body, helping to improve blood circulation and prevent any disruption in blood flow. This extremely comfortable design will alternate air to different parts of the cushion in cycles, ensuring that pressure never becomes too much for the skin.
How Stable is the Alternating Air Cushion to Use?
As the Harvest Cushion uses air to fill its six cells evenly, it means that the user will stay around the middle of the cushion without swaying to one side. The supplied cover that sits across the top of the cushion is non-slip too, meaning that the user has little risk of slipping off the cushion.
Is the Harvest Air Cushion Non-Slip?
As mentioned above the Pressure Relief Cushion features a non-slip cover, which can give you a peace of mind that the patient won't slip off the cushion during use. The non-slip design doesn't impede patient transfer however, as it is designed to be non-slip rather than be coarse and abrasive on the patient. For extra peace of mind, the cushion also features a non-slip base, meaning that the cushion itself won't slip and slide around will in use.
Is the Alternating Air Cushion Suitable for Bariatric Patients?
Yes, the Pressure Relief Cushion can take weights as high as 150kg or 23 stone. This makes it ideal for bariatric patients who may not want to spend the day in bed.
Where Can the Harvest Pressure Relief Cushion Be Used?
It is extremely versatile, and as long as it is connected to the mains, the Harvest Pressure Relief Cushion can be used on most chairs. Please bear in mind that the cushion has a depth of 9cm, so if it is placed on a particularly high cushion then the patient's legs may dangle and they may be at a risk of slipping. The cushion can be used in places such as:
- On top of other cushions
- On a bed
- On a chair
- On a sofa
- On a wheelchair
- On a reclining chair
Can the Pressure Relief Cushion Be Used Outside of the House?
Unfortunately the Harvest Pressure Relief Cushion needs to be connected to the mains at all times to work. If you would want to use a pressure relief cushion that is transportable, we would recommend the Harvest Reflect Pressure Relief Cushion. The Harvest Reflect Cushion is another Harvest product which instead of using a pump, uses two layers of foam that offer even weight distribution and air flow, prefect for a wheelchair.
How is the Pump Powered?
The pump is powered directly from the mains electricity via a plug. Should there be a power cut or the cushion lose power, then a warning light will appear and you will be able to move the patient to a pressure relief mattress until power has been restored. Please see the linked user instructions above for information on troubleshooting your Harvest Pressure Relief Cushion.
Should I Buy the Pressure Relief Cushion with the Harvest 1 Pump?
You can only use your Alternating Pressure Relief Cushion if you have a Harvest 1 Pump. The Harvest 1 Pump is suitable for pumping all Harvest Cushions and it is offered here in case you want to buy a replacement pump. You can select whether you want to buy your cushion with or without a pump by selecting the drop down menu above.
Is the Harvest Pressure Relief Cushion Hygienic?
Your purchase is supplied with a cover. This cover is waterproof so as to protect the cushion from fluids and spills, allowing for easy cleaning, and making it suitable for many medical scenarios. Since the cushion is vapour permeable, air is allowed to flow, cooling the patient and providing a comfortable long-term seating option.

We would recommend using and washing the cover for the Pressure Relief Cushion in a washing machine and doing so regularly to improve hygiene. Otherwise it is possible to clean both the pump and cushion when necessary.
