How To Measure Your Finger for the Oval-8 Finger Splint

Whether you suffer from arthritis or have experienced a minor finger injury, you'll know how debilitating such pain and discomfort can be. The Oval-8 Finger Splint is ideal for immobilising the joint to encourage proper healing and joint correction, and can even be purchased in a wide range of sizes for a comfortable fit.

The most secure way of ensuring an accurate fit is to first measure your finger before selecting the size of finger splint. To help make this process as easy and straightforward as possible, we have compiled this handy guide to measuring your ring size before treating the affected finger with the Oval-8 Finger Splint.

What Is the Oval-8 Finger Splint?

Before you find the correct size, it's worth taking a moment to assess whether or not the Oval-8 Finger Splint is the right product for your needs. As the polypropylene finger splint is versatile in its uses, it can help ease pain and discomfort caused by conditions that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Mallet Finger
  • Swan Neck and Boutonniere Deformities
  • Trigger Finger/Thumb
  • Lateral Deviation
  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Hypermobility (EDS)
  • Minor finger injury

Whether required for frequent use to provide relief from the effects of such constant and fluctuating conditions as arthritis, or needed to protect the finger against incidental knocks and further damage while a fracture or injury heals, the Oval-8 Finger Splint offers comfortable pressure distribution and adaptability for optimal finger support.

How Do I Wear the Oval-8?

Once you've confirmed that the Oval-8 Finger Splint is the one for you, it's time to locate the correct joint for measuring. The Oval-8 slides onto the finger, with a wide cut-out oval on the underside of the finger preventing bending and a thin bar above the knuckle providing a barrier against knocks or collisions.

You may find the pain is located in the joint closest to the fingernail – known as the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint – or it may be worse in the middle of the finger, where the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint can be found. The part of the finger that you'll measure will depend on the area where you would like the most support from the finger splint.

The diagram below can help you to identify the areas of the hand where the pain is located, which in turn may help you to better understand your condition or injury.

How Do I Measure My Finger?

Now that you've identified which part of the finger you're going to be measuring, it's time to find the size of Oval-8 Finger Splint you need. By following the instructions below, you will be able to accurately measure the circumference of the joint requiring immobilisation.

You may also find it easier if a friend or family member can help out, especially if you are measuring a finger on your writing hand.

  1. Download the printable finger measurer through the link below, or use a tape measure or piece of string. Wrap it around the joint until it fits comfortably just beneath the knuckle. It should not be too tight that it causes further pain or risks cutting off circulation, nor too slack that it feels like it will slip off.
  2. Mark the measurement with a pen. The more accurate you can be with this, the better. If you have recorded the reading on a tape measure, this can be retrieved straight away once you have moved it away from the finger. Otherwise, if you have chosen to measure our finger with the paper measurer or a length of string, you can straighten it out and then use a tape measure or ruler to measure the reading in either centimetres or inches.
  3. Consult the table below to find your size. The required size can then be selected from the drop-down listing on the Oval-8 Finger Splint product page.
